Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was created in the nineteenth century. This time period has very distinct characteristics in writing and life, many of these characteristics are prominently shown in Frankenstein. The supernatural was very popular in the 1800's this came with romanticism, which was very popular then (Faculty of Humanities, University of Capetown).
The nineteenth century had many different fads. Romanticism was very popular, "this included political and social revolt, and attraction to the supernatural, the morbid, and the cruel" (Professor Catherine Lavender). Some other influences in the 1800s were "Darwin's and his religious views, the industrial revolution, and the British Empire's expanding wealth and influence" (Faculty of Humanities, University of Capetown). These influences are very noticeable in Frankenstein.
On his way to the North Pole, Robert Walton finds Victor Frankenstein, a scientist tells Walton about the events of his life after he becomes obsessed with science and creates a monster. The monster then wants revenge and starts to kill off Victor's family, he says he wont stop unless Victor creates a female monster for him. Victor begins to create a female monster but abandons the project causing the original monster to kill Victors true love. Frankenstein wants revenge for the monsters revenge and ventures to the North Pole to find him. The monster joins Walton briefly to talk to him for a little. (Agatha Taormina)
You can definitely tell that Frankenstein was written in this time period. One main give away is the fact that so many people end up dying in this book. A small boy, nanny, father, and lovely woman all perish on account of one mans actions. This shows that one person has a lot of effect on things. "" (Faculty of Humanities, University of Capetown). Another main point that shows that this book was written in the nineteenth century is the idea that god did not create life. This shows in Frankenstein because Victor creates a living being with his own hands. This represents "Darwin's theory of evolution" (Faculty of Humanities, University of Capetown)
Overall, i think that it is very obvious that this book was written in the 1800's.
