Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley was a very influential author in history. She is often referred to as the “mother” of science fiction. She wrote books like Frankenstein, Falkner, and Mathilda. Mary Shelley traveled to a lot of different places. Mary Shelley was not formally educated because her mother died when she was young. Her step mother did not support her education, Mary read on her own without encouragement.
Mary Shelley was born on August, 30, 1797 in England. Her parents were the rebels of the 1700’s. Her father was a philosopher and a political journalist. Her mother was an author and one of the first supporters of woman’s rights. Mary Shelley’s mother died when she was only 10 days old, and her father was left to take care of her. Eventually he remarried a woman who had another daughter. This daughter’s education was supported but Mary’s wasn’t. She was given complete access to her father’s extensive library and was allowed to listen in on his intellectual conversation with his friends.
Mary published her first poem when she was ten. Both of her parents were authors and she was inspired by her father’s close circle of intellectual friends. The first novel she had published was Mounseer Nongtongpaw; or, The Discoveries of John Bull in a Trip to Paris. Shelley wrote some poems and had some of her letters published after her death. She mostly wrote fiction. Mary was not very popular with critics until after her death.
Mary grew up on England. She met her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley in her fathers close group of friends. He was a married man but Mary and him fell in love and ran away to France and Switzerland to be together. Percy’s wife drown herself soon after. Mary and her new husband moved to Venice where they had their first child who died. Quickly they returned to England and had a son named William who died from Malaria at age three. They also had another girl named Clara who died of dysentery. The only surviving childhood was a boy named Percy. Percy died in a sailing accident in 1822.
Mary Shelley died of a brain tumor in 1851. After her death her books widely gained popularity and critics started to devourer her work. Many years after her death we still read her books and are sometimes even required to read them. This shows just how influential Mary Shelley was on history and I think everyone should read one of her books.
