Synopsis
The story Frankenstein is one of the first science fiction novels created, it was written by Mary Shelley. The story starts out with Walton, a captain, telling the story of a strange man, who boarded his ship. Frankenstein is about a man who is raised in Geneva as royalty and starts reading science text. He becomes obsessed with science and goes to Ingolstadt College to study. Once he gets there he decides he wants to study natural science, chemistry, and alchemy. He figures out how to bring inanimate objects to life and he starts gathering materials from dead bodies to make a human. Once his creation is alive, he becomes deathly afraid of it and becomes sick. His friend Henry Clerval nurses him back to full health.
Victor then goes to visit Geneva and his family because he receives a letter telling him that his bother William has been murdered. The housekeeper, Justine, is accused of the murder. Victor knows that his creation murdered William. Victor’s childhood companion, Elizabeth, who Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein want Victor to marry, is upset because of William’s death and Justine being accused. Justine is eventually executed.
goes on vacation in the mountains to get his mind off of the many stressful things in his life. Like every other time, the monster is there. The creature tells a story about how he is denied from society and lives in solitude. The creation begs Victor to create someone he can love that is just a monstrous as him, Victor agrees. Victor goes to an island to create the monster’s companion. He works long and hard and eventually get paranoid that he is being tricked. He thinks the monster is only asking for a companion so that he can create chaos without as much effort. He disposes of the female monster in the sea surrounding the island. Once Victor is done disposing of the newly created monster he lands on shore, where the townsfolk accuse him of murdering Henry, who has been found dead. Victor again becomes ill and his family comes to visit him, he recovers and a magistrate takes away the charges of murder.
When Victor returns home he is ready to marry Elizabeth. The monster has vowed to be at Victors wedding day but Victor thinks the monster is threatening him. The night of Victor and Elizabeth’s wedding the monster strangles the bride. Victor’s family is extremely depressed because of Elizabeth’s death and Victor’s father passes away from so much sadness. Victor wants revenge so he chases the monster all the way to the Arctic Circle. He is worn out and malnourished when he finds Walton’s ship. He relays his crazy story and he dies. The monster boards the ship and finding Victor’s dead body he realizes he has nothing left to live for.
I would recommend this book for other’s to read. It wasn’t the most exciting book but I thought the theme was interesting and I liked the characters. I didn’t like how slowly the story progressed. I liked how Mary Shelley’s feminist themes came through and overall I kind of enjoyed this book.
